'mercyscape' - deep
'mercyscape' - deep
I painted this piece in 2007. I was selected to be a 'feature artist' for a show at a local gallery and was thrilled with the opportunity. The 'mercyscape' series was still very new and I was delighted to continue to play with the concept of light dancing on water and with the idea that 'mercy is like light'. I specifically remember the night that I was inspired to paint this artwork. My husband and I had been out on a date and we were walking home along Lake Ontario. I remember gasping when we turned a corner and witnessed the intense yellow light playing on the black night water. I don't know about you, but beauty makes me gasp; I did it just last night and surprised Stephen as I witnessed a beautiful ginormous harvest moon! But that night, many moons ago, after a wonderful meal and hearty conversation, beauty struck and I needed to capture it. I was rushing the process and trying to hurry when Stephen encouraged me to take my time and let it soak in. He invited me to 'be still' and sit with it. His invitation felt lavish. It felt selfless. And I loved him for it. I was just learning how to 'see' light and I needed to learn how to give myself permission to slow down and observe with my full self; heart, mind, body and soul.
To this day, my husband is my biggest fan. I have not forgotten that night nor the many times he has sacrificed his time and energy to support my artistic pursuits. I am a lucky woman, and very grateful for his presence in my life.
