"light" - light is sweet
"light" - light is sweet
I painted this piece in 2007. At that time, I was living in Toronto, Canada and shared a studio space with two of my artist friends in the Artscape building at the Distillery District. The studio was about a 10 minute walk from our downtown apartment and I loved every minute of it. Life was good! Stephen and I had been married the year prior. We were still very much newlyweds. And because of the success of the 'mercyscape' series, my career had taken off and I was enjoying the life of gallery representation. I was focused on my work. It was at this specific point in time that I began to desire a baby. I knew that a baby would drastically change everything. And in the most honest assessment of my own heart, I knew that in order to be the mother I wanted to be, there was much that needing attending to.
The 'light' series of paintings became a sort of prayer for a gentle light to shine in the darker places of my heart. In comparison to the 'mercyscape' series which observed light outdoors, the 'light' series attempted to look at how light illuminates an interior space. 2007 was a pivotal year. Soon after this piece was painted, I became pregnant. Olivia's imminent arrival brought clarity and focus to our family. Motherhood has been a fabulous teacher.
