'light' - a star, dancing in the night
'light' - a star, dancing in the night
I painted this piece in 2013 for a solo show happening later that year at Gibson Fine Art in Calgary, Alberta. At that time, I had a studio in the basement of our home which happened to have an extra large window equipping the space with great, natural light. Stephen had taken both kids up north to the cottage for the weekend so that I could focus on painting. The vision for this piece was strong. I wanted to focus on a 'part' of a chandelier, instead of the whole. I cannot remember how many layers it took to paint this piece. But in order to achieve the depth of color and contrast I wanted, it was ALOT! There are at least 50 layers of colored glaze on the original. I remember feeling like it would never happen. At that stage in my life, with 2 toddlers, time was my worst enemy. I had learned to fully embrace the process, but I still struggled in understanding how to surrender to the process when deadlines were looming? Little did I know that a couple months later we would experience a massive flood in our basement that would dramatically alter the course of that year. It was at this time, that I stumbled across a bible verse that I've prayed every single studio day since. The verse is from Psalm 90:17 - Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands upon us; yes, establish the work of our hands.' This verse has become a sort of personal painting mantra. It acknowledges that I cannot do the work in my own strength and calibrates my heart and mind, helping me remember who inspires me and why I paint. Over the years, I have found that this little prayer feels like exhaling anxiety and inhaling peace.
